Spear in hand, the warrior sprints headlong into a fierce battle.
This character design actually comes from a long series of iterations I’ve drawn over the years! Long sleeves, flowy accessories and fabrics are in reality of course impractical for battle, but in a fantasy world, they could be a signature look of a powerful warrior. It’s almost a trope that the most practically dressed people on a fantasy battleground are the grunts, right? The most fun I have when designing characters is when I’m not bound by realism - I can add and play around with elements like her mask and unicorn horn, trying out all kinds of shapes and accessories that I feel fit the scene the best.Given the right balance of fantasy style design and a certain level of logical consideration, I feel such a design could be made believable at first glance. The goal was to have a design detailed enough to have a personality of its own, in conjunction with a strong sense of flow and movement. The spear is also a really underrated weapon! We often see swords of all kinds in various media, but I think the shape and movement of a spear also feels very directional and powerful in a unique way. In this case, I wanted a spear that felt slightly more complex and ornamental, hence basing it off a historical Japanese jumonji-style yari.
