Among hanafuda cards, the five most ornate and meaningful—“Matsu ni tsuru,” “Sakura ni maku,” “Susuki ni tsuki,” “Yanagi to Ono no Michikaze,” and “Kiri ni houou”—are known as the hikari-fuda. Depicting auspicious symbols and historic motifs, they represent the highest-ranking set in the game. Their brilliance transcends the role of mere cards, embodying Japan’s view of nature and aesthetics in condensed form.

In this artwork, the luminous hikari-fuda meet the world of PAC-MAN. Only one card bears PAC-MAN, while the ghosts are confined within the cards, reimagined as “ghost houses.” This fusion of traditional iconography and game motifs expands into a new realm of expression.
