This artwork fuses the world of hanafuda, Japan’s traditional card game, with the iconic arcade game of the 1980s, PAC-MAN. Hanafuda condenses seasonal scenery and auspicious motifs into small cards, reflecting Japanese aesthetics for generations. PAC-MAN, on the other hand, has charmed people across the globe with its approachable design and unique universe.
Here, the imagination begins with a simple question: What if PAC-MAN wandered into the world of hanafuda? Cookie-like patterns and stage-like motifs are woven into the card designs, where tradition and game culture intersect. The cards themselves become a stage where play and culture overlap, highlighted most vividly in the works inspired by the luminous hikari-fuda cards.
Both hanafuda and PAC-MAN have generated new expressions within popular culture. Rooted in history yet alive in the present, they carry their spirit forward into contemporary life.
