Comment

This artwork draws on the hagoita, a traditional Japanese paddle displayed at New Year for protection and good fortune. For centuries, the hagoita has symbolized the power to ward off evil, its decorations bearing auspicious motifs that combine blessing with protection.

In this artwork, the hagoita is adorned with traditional symbols such as the takarabune (treasure ship) and shōchikubai (pine, bamboo, and plum), reimagined through the playful presence of PAC-MAN. Power cookies and TURN-TO-WHIT replace the shichifukujin (Seven Lucky Gods) aboard the takarabune, while a TURN-TO-WHIT peeks out from the bamboo of the shōchikubai motif.

By layering the auspicious form of the hagoita with contemporary pop culture, this artwork reveals the timeless value of “play” that transcends eras. As a decorative object, the hagoita brings together traditional symbolism and the lightheartedness of modern culture, offering vibrancy and joy to everyday space.
