Witches are often accompanied by cats in popular culture, and the duo depicted here is very much inspired by this. What I wanted to create beyond that however, was to tell a detailed story using the world around them. There are various places that a witch would frequent, perhaps a cottage in the woods, or an apothecary. Rather than the more common choices, I wondered what it would be like if such a character found themselves in modern life, except in a much more run down and grimy world. Using this idea, I wanted to draw a train that looked both mundane and real, but also dirty and touched by the supernatural. The subtle occult elements of the handprints and red light were also touches that I felt complemented the characters.
