Eyes are often seen as the windows to the soul, given how expressive we can be with them. Where the gaze is pointed, how wide the eyes are opened, these all send strong signals to the viewer regarding the subject’s emotions and thoughts. However, it can still be difficult to depict well in the context of an illustration. Because of how often we observe eyes in real life, even the layperson can easily spot errors or awkwardness with a closeup illustration. As such, rather than simply expressing a physical object or element accurately and hope that it is enough, the challenge is to imply meaning beyond what is on the surface. In this case, as the final of the three illustrations of “Castle”, I wished to highlight a sense of melancholy and contemplation using her eyes.
