Tower

An elegantly dressed figure ascends the dark stairs in a dimly lit tower, while the city stretches to the sky in the distance. I really enjoy drawing such visuals as it allows me to use shadows and darkness in a strategic manner. Rather than exposing everything in light, selectively highlighting parts of the composition with silhouettes and color allows space for the scene to play out in the viewers’ minds. I feel it works well for this piece, as a sense of mystery and danger is essential in justifying the character’s design and movement. If this scene was in a brightly lit and clean stairwell, perhaps the atmosphere and mood would be lost. As it is however, the warm light from below casts an ominous set of shadows upwards, while the large window allows for both the character to stand out as a silhouette as well as the rest of the world to visually present itself. I hope that you would feel excited and intrigued about where this character is going next!
