Chronicles は、『攻殻機動隊』というアニメーション作品を起点に、 日本のセル画文化が培ってきた「動きの分解と重なり」を、静止画として再構成した作品。
本作では、「攻殻機動隊展」のキービジュアルをベースに、 セル画におけるレイヤー構造や動きの残像を想起させる手法として、 草薙素子のイメージをさらに何層にも重ねている。
またGAAATのシグネチャー表現であるコンバージのビジュアルを各所に反映。
アニメーションは本来「動く絵」だが、 その一枚一枚は、静止したセルの連なりによって成立している。 今一度その構造に立ち返り、動きを止めることで逆説的に「時間」を可視化。
シリーズを横断して集積された無数の素子は、時代ごとに異なる表現や思想をまといながら、 それでもなお一つの存在として立ち上がる。
『攻殻機動隊』は、シリーズごとに異なる解釈、異なる時代性、 異なる表現方法によって語られてきた作品である。 本作は、一つの物語を語るための作品ではなく、 シリーズを横断して蓄積されてきたイメージや思想が、 重なり合いながら立ち上がる複数のナラティブを提示している。
それらは互いに連なりながらも、決して一つの視点や結論には回収されない。 作品ごと、そして受け取り手ごとに、異なる解釈が立ち上がる余地を残した。
