By setting ourselves as if we were a bird, looking at the character from a branch above, I hoped to create a peaceful atmosphere to match her gaze. As such, I was able to better capture a realistic looking scene using the red light. Depth of field is also a tool I employed here to create a stronger sense of separation between elements, where the fore, mid and background are distinctly segregated. As it is however, the warm light from below casts an ominous set of shadows upwards, while the large window allows for both the character to stand out as a silhouette as well as the rest of the world to visually present itself. It was challenging to properly dial in the right mood with expression alone. Using lighting however, allowed for a substantial upgrade beyond what was initially possible. I elected to use a spotlight effect which allows for the character’s hair to shade most of her eye region. This adds a sense of mystery and coolness, while the mouth and lower face remains lit.
